Films do many things. They make us laugh, cry, happy, angry, sad, excited, enriched, so many things. But the one thing they do best of all: they let us escape. Doesn’t matter how old you are, what you do for a living, if you have a family, if you have good friends, if you’re still in school, none of that matters. Because no matter who you, life can get a bit shit sometimes. It can get boring or leave you wanting more. That’s where films come in. Films are the doorway to new worlds that we inhabit for a few hours and forget our problems. And we watch certain characters and think “Oh God, why can’t I be them?”. Well, here I am to list the characters who I’ll bet most of you have wished to be at times, and I certainly know I have.
Billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist. I think that sums up pretty well why everyone wants to be Mr. Stark. On top of that, you’d have the pleasure of flying around in the Iron Man suits, feeling pretty cool, you can save the world, be a national icon, and you’d get to bang Gwyneth Paltrow. What’s not to like? Ok, so you have to live with Paltrow as well. And talk to her. So it’s not all perfect. But you’d also get the pleasure of looking like Robert Downey Jr., a reward on its own, and you’d give off this undying aura of awesome.
Oh come on, even men wish they are as much of a badass as Natasha Romanoff. Scarlett Johansson’s beauty aside, Black Widow is one of the most awesome characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of all the Avengers, she had the least resources or abilities but she still managed to kick ass. She’s an excellent companion and a leader when she needs to be. She knows how to keep her cool in stressful situations, and knows when to make the right calls. Suffice to say, Black Widow is one hell of a character.
Handy with a sword, and men would know never to piss you off. The Bride was, of course, the heroine of Quentin Tarantino’s two-part epic Kill Bill, a film about a woman who was shot and left for her dead by the group of assassins she was once a part of. She sets out to get revenge on those who wronged her, one by one, until she reaches Bill, her former lover. The Bride is fearless, cunning and, much like Black Widow, an utter badass. She finds her way out of the most difficult and life threatening situations, because she has the motivation to drive her forward and keep her going.
Sure, he’s a bit of a geek, but on this site we encourage that. Henry Jones Jr. is a teacher, but he’s an adventurer at heart. In the four films of his franchise (Yes, there were four films everyone. FOUR. Learn to accept it), Indy found himself getting chased by boulders, overcoming near impossible challenges, taking car chases through Shanghai and so much more, enough to truly get the blood pumping, and to certify having a pretty awesome life. Surely the mysterious artifacts and hidden treasures and cultural learning would be worth nearly getting killed every time you leave the house?
Ok, so maybe not everybody wants to be short, green and old. But imagine being as wise as Yoda. Imagine having the knowledge of this 900-year old creature, and being able to pass this knowledge on to those who came to you for guidance. Despite his frail appearance, Yoda is also pretty good with a light-saber, jumping around everywhere and making it known he’s a little green badass with an amazing mind.
Maybe instead of being an alien, you’d rather kill them instead? Ripley is the hero of the Alien franchise, as portrayed fantastically by Sigourney Weaver. She has bravery, has faced the toughest of odds, even sacrificed herself to save the inhabitants of a prison planet (Because in a universe where you can just be cloned and live exactly the same as you did before, that’s not an issue). She’s simply one of the greatest heroes that cinema has ever seen, and not many ordinary people could take on an Alien Queen in a Powerloader.
Of course, the most obvious one. A lot of men would kill to be Agent 007. Beautiful women, cool gadgets, taking down the bad guys in your nicest suit, and then driving away in your Aston Martin. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? To live a life of danger, but know that you have the skills and the smarts to survive it, and look awesome in the process. Everyone wishes they sounded as cool as Bond does when he orders a drink, or when introduces himself backwards. Alas, we are not James Bond, but we can dream.
