Directed by Mark Waters (known for working on Mean Girls), the story centres around the lives of two teenage vampires, Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and best friend Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), who attend the school St Vladimir’s (colloquially known among the vampire community as Vampire Academy).
From looking at the trailer, it is easy to see that the same humour and bad-assery that was in previous works has come through yet again with this new piece. The feature film is looking like it won’t be disappointing to the fans of the franchise as it has just the right amount of violence, teenage drama and angst, and also a little bit of sexiness thrown in to keep people entertained.
Rose Hathaway’s character is the centre of attention, which is good because this means that the writers and producers and everyone involved is playing true to the books as in the books she is the main character. Rose comes off at a first glance as edgy, feisty and not to be messed with and that really shows through. She doesn’t take anybody’s crap and to me this means a very good female role in a big movie heading for success. Sometimes though, the vampires she has to associate with may get the wrong idea about her that could lead her into more trouble than is really needed. She is also compassionate and caring for her best friend and her safety as she is sworn to protect her at all costs.
The girls seem to just want to go by their every-day lives as normally as possible for teen-vampires going through enough changes and emotions already, but that’s hard when you have so many people against you that you forget who is actually on your side. Little things just seem to be getting in their way, and those little things build up and build up, until there is a bigger problem that needs to be solved. The girls, and their school, may not be as safe as they thought.
From fatal danger to boy troubles to a mystery waiting to be solved, this movie really does have it all. For more information or if you want to get involved yourself, you can visit the official UK facebook page (www.facebook.com/VampireAcademyUK) or use the Twitter feed (#VampireAcademy).
