The film, directed by Robert Rodriguez, is the sequel to the 2005 crime/thriller Sin City which starred Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. Many of the cast of the original are returning to their roles and will star alongside newcomers Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Joseph-Gordon Levitt and – more notably – pop music sensation Lady Gaga.
The sequel will deal with four unique plotlines, some of which take place before, during and after the different storylines of the previous film.
Frank Miller, who wrote the original neo-noir comics on which the movies are based, personally adapted the screenplay from his own works as he did with the first film. Whereas Sin City took it’s main influence from the first, third and fourth books in the series the second film will primarily be based on the second book, and also includes two new stories which were crafted exclusively for the movie.
Plans for the follow-up have been in development for nine years but the script was only finalised in 2011, with production beginning the following year.
The trailer is a visual feast and a real treat to anyone who is familiar with Rodriguez’s work, showcasing the unique colour-specific technique (mostly black and white save for one or two objects vital to the characters and/or story) which encompasses both films as well as expanding on the general style which he introduced in the first one, directly inspired by Miller’s comics. Whilst it’s obvious that much, if not all, of the scenes in this film were shot on a green screen – because of the specific choice of colour (or lack thereof) – the CGI special effects feel authentic (which might not have been possible otherwise).'
