For his latest, Schwarzenegger teams with David Ayer, the writer-director behind the good Harsh Times and the very good End of Watch, as well as the script for Training Day. The project they've geared up for? Sabotage, a heavy duty actioner about an elite DEA task force whose members start to get picked off one by one after their latest job nets them a highly sought after member of a major drug cartel and a huge sum of money. Now it's up to them to fight against the onslaught and find out if there is a traitor in their midst.
(On a rather hilarious note, Wikipedia claims the story is loosely based on an Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None. I think someone's been trolling again).
On evidence of the trailer, this looks to be following through on the balls-to-the-wall action that the fans of action flicks want from the return of the mighty Schwarzenegger, who continues to look every bit of ass kicker that he did when he first started looking for Sarah Connor. There is explosions and gunfire aplenty to be seen, so this should certainly help to signal that, like he always promised, the man is back.
What's more, he's in some pretty good solid company for the film. Starring alongside him are Sam Worthington (rocking a kind of System of a Down look), Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, and Mireille Enos as the DEA team led by Schwarzenegger, with Olivia Williams pulling duty as the cop intent on investigating the crew when things start to look wrong. And they all look like they're pulling their weight.
If there is to be a problem from this movie, it's likely to be from the pretty derivative nature of the story. Set-up-wise, this feels an awful lot like another Ayer-scripted actioner S.W.A.T.. David Ayer has a habit of repeating himself in his work, which can lead to an unhealthy kind of déjà vu. That said, the man does make compelling stuff when he's in the director's chair, so these plot similarities may only be apparent in the trailer.
At this point, what we will know for sure is this: Arnie kicks ass. Arnie is in Sabotage. Sabotage has a good chance at kicking some serious ass.
