David Cronenberg is an icon of horror movies. He has spent a life time creating visual nightmares, gory treats and his aesthetics are so iconic that he has long plague our minds since Jeff Goldblum and James Woods contorted to become our monsters. However, Cronenberg is far better at exposing humanity in this utterly visceral and psychological way. His movies with an intense and powerful arc, such as A History of Violence and Videodrome, are tantalising affairs that plague much more than his ghoulish creations.
And now here he is again with new movie Maps to the Stars. Starring Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson, this stirring and already polarizing movie has just released its new trailer. The movie centres on The Weiss family. The father Dr Stafford Weis has accumulated riches with self-help books. His wife, daughter and son, however, are struggling with mental issues of their own. Agatha, the daughter, has just been released from rehab and she takes up a new job working with the equally fragile yet tempestuous actress Havana Segrand. But will all these broken minds, can tensions over boil?
Oh my goodness. With just this latest trailer, Cronenberg has created an already interesting and powerful affair. Judging from the strong acting pool that includes John Cussack and Olivia Williams, there isn’t a bit of this that I couldn’t happily scrutinise and love. Maybe I’m being a little biased because Cronenberg is my favourite director but judging by this intense trailer and the fact Moore garnered the Best Actress at Cannes this year means that the star studded affair could be mapping to success.
Of course, Cronenberg is infamous for his movies splitting down the middle and causing controversy. But that, for me, only makes it more interesting.
Maps to the Stars is out September 26th
