Starring two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner as Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Webb, Kill the Messenger is a thriller based on Webb’s quest to uncover a conspiracy in the CIA. As Webb accidentally finds himself stumbling on what may be the origins of the USA’s crack epidemic, he discovers that the CIA may have been aware of drug smugglers, using their dealings to finance rebels in a war-torn Nicaragua. But as the trailer shows, Webb’s determination to uncover the truth leads to a threat to his career, his life, and the lives of his family.
Following on from American Hustle, Renner takes another period film, but one with slightly less outlandish hair styling. Kill the Messenger, from this trailer, seems to straddle the line between Renner’s indie work and the many blockbuster franchises he is a part of. He is also backed up by a stellar supporting cast, many of whom appear in this trailer. There’s The Wire’s Michael K Williams, Scott Pilgrim’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Sheen and Andy Garcia to name but a few. But the focus of the trailer is purely on Renner and the incredible real life story of Gary Webb. With Webb’s investigation taking him from Californian prisons, to Washington DC, to the villages of Nicaragua, there’s plenty of visual excitement on screen, with Nicaragua in particular looking luscious in this trailer even despite the dark subject material.
Kill the Messenger is released on 10th October, leaving plenty of time for further trailers to appear, but on the strength of this trailer alone, Kill the Messenger looks set to be a thrilling, if potentially Oscar-baiting conspiracy thriller to keep an eye on.
