Those are the two words that seem to best sum up this new trailer for the much-anticipated Interstellar. Nolan is continuing to do what he does best in the trailers for his films. He recaps a few things from past trailers and shows new footage as well without revealing too much. While we have seen this technique before, it’s still very effective. There are two things are going to help promote this film, Nolan and McConaughey. Mainstream audiences will go to see Interstellar because they don’t what to miss the next film staring an Oscar winner and Nolan fanboys (like myself) will see this film because it’s simply the next Nolan film.
The new footage that is shown in this trailer looks great. We finally have our first look at what’s on the other side of a wormhole, which is a very beautiful and seemingly cold world. But as you can see it’s not all safe. Explosions, tidal waves and whatever the hell that weird, blocky machine/maybe alien thing is are some of the perils McConaughey, Hathaway and others will have to face. It shows there is already a high sense of danger on the other side as well as on Earth. Speaking of Earth, we see a little bit more of Jessica Chastain as an “undisclosed character”, which we all know is pretty much McConaughey’s daughter from the beginning. I can understand Nolan’s thinking of wanting to keep Chastain’s role secret but at this point we can already tell who is she. It’s Miranda Tate/Talia Al Ghul all over again. Then again Nolan could surprise us, he’s done it before.
The scenes in space look equally incredible. There was the question of how do you top the space scenes from Gravity? The answer, you don’t go there. All of these shots of space are in deeper parts of our galaxy and beyond. The animators for those scenes have also match the artistic look that the cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema is going for. Space has never looked so different and beautiful. This is still my most anticipated film of the year and I, as well as so many other people, am so excited to see this film. Interstellar cannot get here soon enough.
