Paramount and MGM have come together to release the upcoming sword-and-sandals actioner Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson as the super strong demigod of Greek legend. Taking its basis more directly from the Radical Comics series of the same name (specifically The Thracian Wars), Hercules attempts to cast a more revisionist eye over the myth of the half-man, half-god who, having completed his fabled Twelve Labours, is now tasked by the King of Thrace with putting an end to a tyrannical warlord and his demonic army.
Filling the sandals of the titular character is Dwayne Johnson (do we need to remind people that he’s The Rock anymore?), who comes onscreen more bearded and muscles than perhaps he’s ever been before. Joining him in the cast are some pretty solid names, like Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan and John Hurt. And all of this comes care of director Brett Ratner.
At this point, it certainly looks a lot more visceral and spirited than Summit’s big flop The Legend of Hercules from earlier this year. That said, it’s still a whole of noise and flashy stuff that effectively boils down to great images and a vague semblance of story. No denying the great cast, though. And Johnson has proved time and again that he can hold a screen through sheer force of personality. The guy’s good, let’s be honest.
More will likely come forth between now and the film’s July release. Until then, check out the trailer below.
