Just from this teaser trailer you can see why Foxcatcher is already creating a lot of buzz from the awards circuit and it’s all down to one word, reinvention. Over the past two years, Matthew McConaughey has reinvented himself from being the guy who takes his top off all the time to a serious, legitimate actor, and it worked. If there’s one thing that the awards circuit love, it’s when an actor is willing to change, whether it’s breaking away from what audiences expect from a certain actor like McConaughey, or when they change their appearance for a role, like Charlize Theron in Monster. Foxcatcher seems to be doing both in this trailer. Channing Tatum, who has been classed as a pretty boy who stars in soppy romantic films, is trying to follow McConaughey and be taken seriously as an actor. In this teaser, as Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, he definitely shows a high level of intensity and determination that show a possible, powerful performance from him. But even though Tatum is getting all the hype for this film, for me it’s Steve Carell, as his deranged trainer John du Pont, who stands out here and could come away with an Oscar nomination. Carell has changed his appearance for this film and at first I didn’t realise it was him. Carell is playing a character unlike anything he’s done before. The intense music throughout the trailer when Carell appears on screen adds a darker tone to the film and based off the true story I found (don’t research the story if don’t want to know what happens in the film) this film is bound to get very dark.
It seems that the filmmakers have confidence in Carell’s performance based off the fact that Carell is billed first ahead of Tatum, who at the moment is the bigger star. While the film will look at the physical and emotional battles the characters have with themselves and each other, I think there will be a real battle come awards season between Carell and Tatum. Who will the awards circuit be more in favour with, the comedy star who changed his appearance for a film role that not many people would have cast him for, or the pretty boy actor following in the footsteps of McConaughey showing his intensity by hitting himself and smashing a mirror with his head? Who will be the true best in the world come the Oscars?
