But this time in metal suits.
Cruise plays Major William Cage who is sent on a mission to defeat an army of other worldly things who are on a relentless crusade against Planet Earth (obviously.) However, Cage is trapped in a time loop. Whenever he dies, he wakes up again only to find himself at the beginning of the day again having to start all over again. That is until he meets Rita, (Emily Blunt) a woman who is in a similar situation. The pair decide to hatch a plan with each other to start a two man war against the invasion, developing new ideas every time.
So yes, it is War of Worlds meets Groundhog Day. While it looks like it could be pretty impressive, there is a lot of similar tropes from other movies such as Pacific Rim. With the exception of the time loop, it is just another tiresome alien invasion movie where man in America is in an unwinnable war. Except is it? Because now we have two heroes come up to save is with robot suits. Luckily, a saving grace in this is Emily Blunt who seems as ferocious and kick ass as Rita, pushing this trailer into a “actually, it might be good, territory.”
I tell you what though, the soundtrack is epic and certainly the biggest draw of this movie.
Edge of Tomorrow is due July 2014
