Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle, a small town parish priest. In the confessional one day, someone tells him that in one week he will kill Lavelle. Bound by the laws of the church, Lavelle must reach out further to his parishioners in order to deter the threats. As well as seeing to unfinished business, an attaining to any sin he may have committed, Lavelle chooses to honourably seek engagement with this would be killer and learn much more about the town he loves so dearly, and the religion he has invested in.
Calvary looks extremely promising. This Irish thriller (and black comedy) is set to be outstanding. With Gleeson at the helm, you can bet that the lead role will be captivating as Lavelle toils with his impending doom looming over his head. McDonagh seems to have written a taunt and brave movie that works with all aspects of the human soul; including religion. It has been boasted as a dark comic thriller, so no doubt it will have slabs of realism that will make you chuckle at the worst time in a way that only human nature can. Boasting a stellar supporting cast with Kelly Reilly, Domnhall Gleeson and Chris O’Dowd, this is going to be a gripping, tense and incredible movie.
And hopefully, Gleeson will get many awards for this multi-layered role.
