Beyond the Lights tells the story of a young singer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who, since childhood, has been pressured by her mother (Minnie Driver) to be successful in her career. On the brink of super stardom, she decides she can’t handle it and tries to kill herself, before she’s saved by a young police officer (Nate Parker). From that night, the two become close and form a relationship, giving her the confidence to finally stand up to her mother and be happy.
The film looks moderately decent; it has an emotional edge, which will either come out very powerful or very cliche’d, and a good story. However, despite having Minnie Driver and Danny Glover in the cast, the leads are fairly unknown so we can only hope that they are new talents to be discovered.
Beyond the Lights is out 14th November in the US.
