A series of images has been created with an image of a model from most of the districts, looking like a magazine cover with an excerpt below of what they are famous for, as The Capitol is revelling in all of their accomplishments and reminding people to be grateful for each other. Hm … this doesn’t sound like the Capitol, does it?
The images come across as Propaganda from The Capitol as in Catching Fire, everyone is on the verge of revolting, and The Capitol are at the midst of all the anger and hatred. So what better way to assuage the hostility than to make their slaves, which the people in the districts effectively are, than to make them feel important and vital to the running of the country?
The models are made to look glamorous despite their dirty and difficult lifestyles. With no choice in where they live or what they do for a livelihood, the districts are being made to look more exciting and desirable than they actually are. District four’s model is beautiful with a huge haul of fish to finish her days work, District seven has lost a leg but that doesn’t matter because the Capitol admires them, he’s made a wooden leg to replace it, plus he has huge muscles and an attractive face so life can’t be that bad! The Capital are encouraging young children to work in the mines, despite the danger, because their size would be an asset and their reasoning for it is that the healthy looking children want to do it and are appreciated for it.
All the signs of malnourishment and illness that the districts really suffer from are glossed over and insulted by these posters, but what a way to introduce the setting for Mockingjay. This perfectly encapsulates The Capitol’s position in an upcoming rebellion and their solution is so typically Capitol, that it makes you wonder if they’ve learned anything at all during the events of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. ‘As you discover the inspiring pieces the Capitol Ministry of Information has set about your District, remember that we are One Panem. Stand by the Capitol and forge a bond that is unbreakable.’
