Ahhhh… The Oscars. The Big Cheese. The Academy Awards. It’s that time of year where we either flail with excitement that our favourite films have been nominated. Or we weep into our scarves and shoulders of our friends who don’t quite understand why we are so upset. Yet still, we’ll come back to this awards, touting them as the crème de la crème. After all, it is the award that most artists will aim for – even to have the words “Academy Award Nominee” is as prestigious; imagine winning one. And whilst as an audience, we sit back and groan about the snubs or the winners (cough, American Hustle, cough cough), we can’t help but get excited for this year’s nominations!
Or we would if they weren’t so predictable. Or mind numbingly stupid.
Shorts look great though and I’m thrilled to see, The Bigger Picture The Phone Call and Butter Lamp awarded.
The biggest contentions at the moment is why the hell American Sniper was nominated at all? Why hasn't Selma been nominated for more? And do people really think that Meryl Streep's performance in Into The Woods was one of the best of 2014? Like is that a thing?
The biggest snubs here were Selma which is maddening because it completely shows how biased the awards are. There was also no love for The Lego Movie, which is too sad. Also notably not nominated is Timothy Spall and Mike Leigh for Mr Turner who were hotly tipped over summer and Cannes. And naturally, a lot of British films and feel good comedies were missed including Pride and 71 – which makes our hearts sink. Also, where the fuck is Jack Gyllenhaal's Oscar Nomination for Nightcrawler?
