After seeing the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness umpteen times, you'd think I would be sick and tired of it, but once again seeing the trailer in 3D at the cinema last week just encouraged me to think even more about what may be happening in this year's hottest to-be blockbuster… and only 3 months to go!
After seeing the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness umpteen times, you'd think I would be sick and tired of it, but once again seeing the trailer in 3D at the cinema last week just encouraged me to think even more about what may be happening in this year's hottest to-be blockbuster… and only 3 months to go!
The biggest prediction I have to start with is: Who is Benedict Cumberbatch playing? There are 3 major rumours currently circulating.
Entertainment Weekly supposedly broke the story that Cumberbatch was playing "Khan", arguably the most well known villain from Star Trek: The Original Series and the film Star Trek ll: Wrath of Khan, and was voted as one of the top ten greatest film villains of all time by the Online Film Critics Society. However, the people at Entertainment Weekly may have just been fed up with typing out Benedict Cumberbatch everytime they mention his name and could have just gone with the easiest name to write. I'm sure they would have written ‘Sherlock Holmes’ if it had been any easier to write...

Lastly, and this may be a possibility because of the source, is that Cumberbatch is playing a character called ‘Gary Mitchell’, a very un-dramatic name if I say so myself despite the scary villain behind the name. After appearing in the Original Series episode Where No Man Has Gone Before in which Mitchell is given special powers after being zapped by a Galactic Barrier, Kirk is forced to leave him on the planet ‘Delta Vega’ but ends up killing Mitchell, as he is too dangerous. The source of this possibly unlikely rumour was co-star Karl Urban (‘Bones’ McCoy), but hasn't been confirmed by the production team. Although Mitchell died in the series, this current movie run takes place in a new continuity so perhaps we could see another version Mitchell?

This looks strikingly similar to the end of Star Trek ll: Wrath of Khan involving Kirk and Spock right before he died. Surely J.J. Abrams can't be re-using what's already been done? I hope not, because otherwise he will have a Star Trek revolt on his hands...

In the last few moments of the trailer, you see what you can assume is the Starship Enterprise crashing into a river or sea. It is a beautiful piece of cinematography when something you know is completely animated looks so real. However, seeing this raises a few eyebrows. Why is the Enterprise crashing? You see earlier in the trailer that someone is staring through a hole in the ship down at the city, whatever reason the ship is coming down, it isn't a good one, but when would it be? You see throughout the trailer lots of explosions, crewmembers being thrown about and the Enterprise dodging between space debris towards a planet that looks a lot like earth. Lots and lots of hints to get one message across: The Starship Enterprise is going down.
The overall look of the trailer is quite dark, much darker than the first film. I honestly can't wait for this to come out and I will be waiting in line to be one of the first to see it. Until that point, the cinematography of the trailer itself is enough to keep me content until the film comes out, but I still want more!

This song is now planted on my iPod and with me forever and if you are interested in finding it, the song is called "The Awakening" by Brian Tyler.
