Picking a song from a musical is a tentative process. Especially if it is a good one. I mean, would you go for the iconic moment? The finale? The emotional ballad of our protagonists as they profess their love? See, when a fantastic film has a whole heap of songs so fantastic you’ll be humming them along with your friend whilst naked in the shower, you cannot fail in picking a great song to enjoy. But you could clash with other fans about which is the most stellar.
Hmm, tricky.
Pitch Perfect is one of those films that suffers from its abundance of great music. To celebrate the release of Pitch Perfect 2, I’m taking a gander at one of the best moments in the film.
This is one of the best musicals of all time that showcases a high energetic plot enhanced by the stellar beats and tracks. Notably, though they go head to head with the champions on campus - an all-male choir - the movie centres on Beca’s relationship with the ladies and the challenges they meet. They equally showcase an element of sexuality, hilarity, weirdness and disgusting moments that brim with entertainment. The comedic elements are on point, in tune with the emotionality of the film too that creates an extremely enjoyable film. The girls at the centre of the Bardem Bella’s are an eclectic bunch of females that tick every box. And yet they all work with dedication and talent making their performances utter belters.
While not technically a musical, just a movie that has musical performances in it, the entire film does more for A cappella than five series of Glee ever did. How? By making it cool. Mashing up a series of popular songs and perfectly aligned them so they work, it’s impossible not to love this soundtrack. From No Diggity at the Riff-Off to Just A Dream/Just The Way You Are, the songs are rambunctious and slide together in these perfect pieces. But the best moment is definitely the final performance by the Bellas.
So the set-up goes as follows; the Bardem Bellas’ have been humiliated but are offered one more chance when a rival team are found to have cheated. When they collide over the set list, the Aubrey concedes that the team need to refresh their ideology and set list and enlists Beca’s talent for combining songs. A hushed crowd, tentative about what they are going to bring, all waits in bated breath as to what comes next.
And what does come next?
This bloody genius mash-up performance.
