Hey, here’s something from the quieter side of movie news. Remember Original Gangstas, the 1996 Blaxploitation actioner starring Fred Williamson, Pam Grier and Jim Brown?
Well, I do! And here’s the news… they’re planning a sequel.
The film starred legends of the Blaxploitation era Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam Grier and Richard Roundtree, who I’m sure could still kick all of our asses. And the sequel looks like it’s going to be bringing the band back together for another blast. The Hammer (that’s Williamson, by the way) has been trying to get a follow-up to the original film for a while now, even mentioning it on the commentary track for the laserdisc release of Original Gangstas. However, attempts to find financial backing have proved unsuccessful.
With the recent high-profile successes to get funding for filmmakers like Zach Braff and Spike Lee and their projects, it surely makes good sense for Williamson et al to try their hand at crowdfunding on the Internet. Starting today, they launched their campaign to raise the budget of $1.2 million for what I hope will be a successful and fun piece of throwback ass-kicking on film.
Click the link to check out their Kickstarter campaign page and find out more about the project, maybe even think about contributing. Also, if you’re on Twitter, they’ve got an account there where you can follow progress.
Let’s make this one happen, folks. Old dogs can totally still kick you in the face.
