This year’s Summer of Cinema showcase and quiz took place this week. Yes, film industry insiders gathered in a secret location, well The Courthouse Hotel, to test their knowledge of the 2015 summer releases.
All participants gathered in the main quiz hall. Posters and cut outs were everywhere, reminding us that there is so much to see in cinema over the coming months. Once everyone is seated in their teams and has picked a team name, (we were called Professor Quizzal, courtesy of editor Cookie herself) it is time to begin.
Next up is host Alex Zane who walks us through the four rounds of the quiz, which he informs us has instant win questions which prompts "Ooooos" from the audience. There is a picture round, general summer film questions, observations of trailers and finally multiple choice questions. The first instant win question is won by the I’m With Geek team and Roxy takes home some DVD’s, a book and some Minion merchandise, which she kindly gives to me, (I do love my Minions).
With clips from Inside Out, Pixels, The Minions, Ted 2, Spy and more the quiz showcases how much there is to see. Once the quiz finishes its time to tally the scores. As they’re marked a small mountain of pizza is brought in to occupy attendees. Our Professor Quizzal is lucky enough to come second place with a rather respectable 27 out of 31; beaten by the team behind us by a mere one point. We still walk away with a selection of film goodies and a sense of accomplishment.
To end the quiz attendees have been promised a preview of an up and coming film. From all the Minion merchandise scattered about the place, I am not the only one who thinks we may be seeing the little guy’s origin story early. Zane enters the cinema screen and thanks us for attending. He announces that we are about to watch Boychoir the new film starring Dustin Hoffman. A little deflated, as it's like being promised sex only to get bible studies, the lights go down. Boychoir is no Minions but a great film that feels like Whiplash for juniors. A fantastic showcase of the summer of cinema ahead for audiences, courtesy of the FDA.
Thank you for such a fun event! We'll see you next year!
