Now, here’s a film that looks genuinely tantalising and could garner Jeremey “Hawkeye” Renner an Oscar nomination. The poster, the trailer and now the movie stills have given us a buzz of excitement for Kill The Messenger, directed by Michael Cuesta. The latest pictures that have emerged see Renner in dramatic poses, institutions and more interesting facial expressions, all culminate in a great looking film.
Revolving around the true story of journalist Gary Webb, the 1990’s based film sees Webb uncover the secret and murky past of CIA. The institution have been importing massive amounts of cocaine into the U.S and selling them to ghettos across the Country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Told repeatedly not to follow the story, Webb goes public and incenses the Government who then fight back with an extensive smear campaign. Torn between his integrity as a journalist (no scoffing) and the protection of his life and family, Webb must battle wits with the highest power in the world: the American CIA.
Feeling very much like All The President’s Men, Kill The Messenger is tantalising affair. Bringing back the suspect fashion choices of the nineties, the vehicle for Renner to excel after some successful films. Though the film also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Sheen, Oliver Platt, Andy Garcia and Ray Loitta, the eyes here are very much focused on Renner. Can he effectively translate Webb’s story in this sweeping and thrilling drama?
