I’m always up for a bad comedy. Whether it’s Adam Sandler’s latest or the new formulaic sex adventure, I have no doubt that I’ll find some shred of enjoyment. So whenever LOVEFiLM doesn’t send me the film I want, but rather a critically trashed comedy, I’m absolutely fine with it. But let me make this clear: I’m ok with them sending me a bad comedy, NOT A FREAKING DEATH SENTENCE.

But let me make this clear: I’m ok with them sending me a bad comedy, NOT A FREAKING DEATH SENTENCE.
To be honest, it’s my fault for having it on the list. So rather than spending my weekend basking in Brad Pitt goodness, I was instead sent Life As We Know It, starring Josh Duhamel, aka that army douche from Transformers, and Katherine Heigl, aka the reason we can’t have nice things. Once again, she attempts to make us laugh and fails miserably. But what was her evil scheme this time? Use a baby. Yep. The two douche bags play Holly and Messer, two people who detest each other after a date gone wrong, but constantly have to see each other due to having mutual friends, Peter and Allison, who are married and have a daughter. However, when the parents unexpectedly die in a car crash, the two find out they have been named the child’s guardians, and must look after her together, with (apparently) HILARIOUS results (sarcasm, by the way... Just checking).
Ok, let’s rewind that: Their friends are unexpectedly killed in a car crash, leaving them with no choice but to look after their child. Is it just me, or does that sound like a really good Drama? Sure, they try to show how difficult it is for them in the film, but before long, it’s just the baby pooping in a hat. Again. Get rid of the jokes, get rid of the silliness, get rid of Heigl, and you’ve got yourself something great. But nope. They had to make it a comedy. An unfunny one at that.

Moving on from that, let’s complain about the rest of the film: It’s absolutely dire. Seriously, did ANYONE enjoy this movie? Anyone at all? I can’t see why they would. The humour is as bland as it is boring. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before and it’s not humour that gets funnier. Seriously not helped by our douche bag stars (Yes, I’m going to call them that every time). You know it’s time to give up when the freaking BABY is funnier than you. Hell, the baby out acts both of them, and all she does is poop and cry. Granted, it wouldn’t have been that much more entertaining to see Josh Duhamel pooping and crying, but all the same, that baby has better hope for a career than either of them.
Duhamel is not a screen presence; you either want to punch him in the face or punch him in the nuts. Either way, you just want to inflict pain. I find it hard to believe that he’s playing a douche who suddenly has to become a father. If anything, he’s playing an actor who’s actually playing a douche who suddenly has to become a father, but he sucks at it. His voice is grating, his face is stupid, and he delivers every line with a hint of “Laugh at me God damn it! Laugh!” in his voice. He’s actually very similar to Heigl, who has pretty much built her entire career around that. Even in Knocked Up, one of the funniest films of the past 10 years, she manages to bore. When it comes to Heigl movies, I rely on her co stars to keep me watching. Seth Rogen did the job fine, but when her co star is just as bad as her, what hope does the film have?
A stunningly beautiful drama... Wasted, to make room for a stunningly bad comedy. And as much as I like bad comedies, this just didn’t cut it. It’s so bad; it doesn’t deserve to be a bad comedy. Horrible acting, horrible script, wasted potential – Might as well have been Katherine Heigl’s biographic film.
