Whether you like musicals or not, they seem to be everywhere. This month’s musical moment goes to a filmmaker you wouldn’t usually expect to have his cast spontaneously burst into songs, but never the less it’s a pretty damn good watch. Yes, you heard me right. A musical by Woody Allen.
For the rest of us, we may think we can sing but in reality we can’t hold a single note. Well the same goes for the majority of this cast too. Woody wanted realistic singing, with no frills to add to the rawness of his latest feature. Even though it has been said that Allen withheld the fact it was a musical after everyone signed the contracts, it seemed everyone played ball. Apart from Drew Barrymore’s Skylar who convinced Woody that her singing is so horrendous that she doesn’t even sing in the shower!
Everybody Says I Love You also starts Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Natasha Lyonne and Alan Alda all of which give great performance even if there is the odd slip of a note here or there. The main thing you need to have in mind when watching this, is don’t take it too seriously and enjoy it. This is a feel good film, with singing, dancing and laughing. It seems as if Allen is playing homage to how musicals were originally made and produces yet another well rounded film. If you up for a musical then grab a copy of this and get ready for the refreshing feel of Woody and music.
