As J.J. Abrams’ eagerly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII slowly pieces itself together, the latest news surrounding the epic space movie is that it will be shot with none other than IMAX cameras. Yes, that’s right, IMAX are pleased to announce (via the @bad_robot Twitter account) that the IMAX cameras will be used in the filming of Abrams’ instalment to the Star Wars series; the film being set for release in late 2015. Considering Abrams’ penchant for IMAX cameras (Star Trek: Into Darkness, which he directed, was also partially shot using IMAX cameras), it comes as no surprise that he has chosen to use this equipment again, with the @bad_robot Twitter account highlighting that this was the ‘#bestformatever’.
The latest installation to the epic Star Wars film saga is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, with the plot centring around a trio of young leads, along with previous characters from the earlier additions, such as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker). Of course, Star Wars has had quite the buzz recently, what with the announcement that the film had cast Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, and LOTR star Andy Serkis in unspecified roles.
Whilst it is yet to be confirmed how much of the film, exactly, will be shot in the IMAX format, this news will no doubt delight fans of the series, with audiences hoping that Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII will be a worthy adversary of the former instalments.
