Ecosexual. Now there is a term that you’ve probably never heard before. Ecosexual. It has other terms, “tree hugger” or “hippy” and those are terms I am almost certain you have thrown around at people who give an ounce or two of care about the environment. Ecosexual is different though. They are people who perpetuate Earth as a lover. No longer is motherhood prime for the globe and she is no longer there to take care of us. Instead, a mistress to us all, providing us with sexy life and seducing us with her foliage. It’s no wonder people feel attracted to her and feel the need to protect her.
Helped by a Kickstart campaign and supported by the Sheffield DocFest, Goodbye Gauley Mountain is a beautifully endearing film that takes you into a serious problem. Juxtaposing the steps towards, and Beth Stephens childhood as she obsesses with the beauty of the mountains and the devastation that follows. We’re not just here for the message and the politics, the great documentary actually allows us into the past of our filmmakers and protests leading the charge.
At just over an hour, Goodbye Gauley Mountain is a perfectly impressive documentary that has the sweet backstory of the women to entice us further into coexistence of nature (and, if you think about it, naturists.) It is a wonderful and poignant production that gets to the crux of the message they are trying to perpetuate. The way these two women bare all to stop the destruction of the mountains is admirable. It is a daring accomplishment and perfect protest. Goodbye Gauley Mountain will offer information for those who are unaware, and will also give a truly compelling story about two women against the industry.
Goodbye Gauley Mountain is playing 14th of June at Rich Mix as part of the East End Film Festival. Book your tickets here.
