Our Disney expert Laura gives us the low-down on what to expect!
With this year's occurrence of D23 (the Disney-fied version of Comic Con), as well as several recent announcements, Disney fans are buzzing. Disney has had a somewhat successful year. At this year's Academy Awards, the studio held the most Oscar nominations and wins ever for a single studio. The nominations included three for Best Original Animated Films (a win for Brave), one for Best Short Original Animated Feature (win for Paperman), a nomination for Best Visuals (The Avengers), and 12 for Lincoln (winning three).
Here's a quick round up of what one can expect film wise from the House of the Mouse.
December 13, 2013 marks the release of Saving Mr. Banks. The films depicts the story of how Walt and P.L. Travers (the author of Mary Poppins) met and how Walt fought for and eventually acquired the rights for Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks snagged the role of Walt, while Emma Thompson plays P.L. Travers. It's a well known fact that Ms. Travers despised the film version of her well known books. When she died, her will stated that while she would allow Disney to make a musical theatre version of the books, she forbade The Sherman Brothers from ever writing music for Mary Poppins again, as she despised the songs they wrote. There is an early, but extremely confident, speculation that Emma Thompson will be nominated for an Oscar.
Other big budget films being released over the next year include Muppets Most Wanted (Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais and Tom Hiddleston - whom, it was recently revealed, will be voicing Captain Hook in the upcoming Tinkerbell film), Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) and Into the Woods (Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep). Many Sondheim fans have voiced their displeasure of some of the main casting, including the casting of Meryl Streep and Sophia Grace. It was announced recently, however, that Sophia Grace no longer has the role of Red.
On November 25, 2015, Pixar will also release The Good Dinosaur, which focuses on the question of what happened if the asteroid that caused extinction never occurred and dinosaurs still existed? The story revolves around Arlo, a 70 foot din, who has a huge heart, and while out on a quest, gains a companion in the form of a human boy. The film has hit several snags, including production delays and the original director being removed. Many are still angry over the removal of Brenda Chapman, the female director of Pixar's last film, the Oscar winning Brave, despite the film being released over a year ago. This has caused some to debate whether they will remain loyal to Pixar. The removal of Ms. Chapman, despite being the first woman to ever win an Oscar for Best Original Animated Film, is still a very hot topic amongst animation fans. Odd trivia bit - Ms. Chapman is married to Kevin Lima, who directed Disney's Tarzan and Enchanted.
Overall, Disney fans (as well as Marvel fans) have quite a bit to look forward to. The return of Once Upon a Time is upon us, as well as the start of its spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. There is also new Disney Park news, which will be covered in another article.
I'll keep things updated as we get more information!
