When a director comes into his own with a successful film it can become the piece in his body of work that defines him. Future projects are judged against it and past projects are seen as a build up to greatness. But sometimes when a director comes into his own you look back over his body of work and find unpraised gems. In the case of Shane Meadows, This is England is considered his greatest work. A poignant film that reflects the racial tensions of British culture. But its Meadows earlier film, Dead Man’s Shoes that really shows a director coming into greatness.
