When a foreign language director makes the transition to Hollywood sometimes alarm bells start ringing. Why shouldn’t a talented director just make films in their mother tongue which can easily be enjoyed through subtitles for the mass audience?
However, in the case of Korean director Park Chan-Wook and his English debut Stoker, this inevitable move to Hollywood can sometimes pay off.
The story begins with India (Mia Wasikowska) looking down a ditch and explaining that she's had acutely accurate senses from the day she was born. We’re quickly transferred back to her father Richard’s funeral. Beside her mother Everlyn, (Nicole Kidman) India sees a strange man in the distance who finally reveals himself to be Richards estranged brother, her uncle Charlie, (Matthew Goode). Everlyn takes an instant shine to Charlie with India not trusting him. He makes himself at home but by the reaction of the families house keeper and a distant aunt means there is more to Charlie's past than he's revealed.
