Everyone knows the myth of the Werewolf.

Beastly creatures that change on the full moon once bitten by another. Driven by the need for human flesh and only killed by a silver stake through the heart. The newer take on the Lycan suggests more control over their transformation, but still as deadly. If the codes and conventions of these films are so easily recognised then how can you possibly bring something new to the genre? With the independent film Ginger Snaps, the filmmakers have done just that while telling the story of its two teenage protagonists.

The thought of playing a serial killer must be fascinating to any actor, possessing the darkest of psyches to portray onscreen, you get to explore a truly complicated character. Previous portrayals have given audiences Hannibal Lecter, Buffalo Bill and Norman Bates. With American Psycho, the first-person account of a killer's dark fantasies play out on screen through a mix of black comedy and graphic violence.

The film introduces us to Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), a rich, handsome, yet materialistic investment banker living in yuppie 80s New York. Bateman lives a life of excess, wealth, drugs and parties but beneath his charismatic exterior is a psychotic character with a fetish for blood and violence.

Our culture is very desensitized to a lot of things these days, whether it’s practical FX that they see on screen or whether it’s real life horror. There are films which convey the real life horror; it’s as if we are truly experiencing them. It’s the real horror, which can be something far more scary and confronting than any slasher with a dumb teenager who trips up in the woods and BANG knife to the face!

Do you remember going into a video store as a kid, and searching for what seemed like an eternity for a film that would hold your interest? You rummage through the kids section, and you realise there was nothing there that didn't hold your interest. You then begin to progress into all the aisles and you make your way to the comedy section and you see all these bright coloured spines and you immediately pick up the first film that stands out. What film did you choose?

Cult Classic: Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite was one of those films that I found at just the right time. It arrived in 2009, just as I was starting my final year of university, in a year where I watched a lot of blaxploitation cinema for one of my film classes (getting to watch Blacula as part of a class on cinematic vampires? Awesome). It is, without a doubt, one of the most on-the-nose parodies of a genre I have ever seen, and one that is undeniably crafted with love.

Due to its limited release, I first saw Black Dynamite alone in an almost empty cinema, and was instantly saddened that such a comic masterpiece didn't have a bigger audience. That sadness disappeared with the very first scene, and so began a mere 84 minutes of unrelenting hilarity, the likes of which I have rarely seen outside of "so-bad-it's-good" staples like The Room or Birdemic.
