Happy Father's Day all you crazy Dads out there! Being a father is a lot of hard work and we have great respect for those who have given us a lifetime of epicness. Through every bad joke, our fathers have taught us strength, courage, humility and more. With their devotion to us, we have grown in humour and love, rooted in the twinkling eyes and laughter of our fathers or father figures. In cinema, Dads come in all shapes and sizes. From lions to lawyers, we've had a long history of great fathers who have graced our screens. But which ones are the best? Following on from last years Fathers Day article, here's a look at some of the best fathers in films, in no particular order.

The sea is certainly a mysterious monster. The beast of the ocean may lap joyful waves upon our shores but we still haven’t explored the entirety of its depths, and we probably never will. Without sunlight, quirky weird and odd creatures transform into nightmares, so it is natural to feel tentative around the deep blue. In 1975, Steven Spielberg made the average sea that we paddle in utterly terrifying: A paranoia that has rippled forty years down the line and is still making waves in our industry today.

Last week, we were told the sad news that cinema, television, and musical theatre had lost one of its greats. Ron Moody, who in his 91 years had a varied and extensive career, was perhaps best known for portraying Fagin in Oliver!, Carol Reed and Lionel Bart’s musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. Oliver! was such a defining moment of musical cinema that despite the numerous adaptations and the source material, it is this version that remains in the heart and mind of the public. Much of that is down to Moody’s incomparable performance.

There comes a time when, watching a film, you see someone on screen that captures your attention and you are left wondering who they were. Sometimes there is a certain sense of star quality to them, that you can’t help but feel like one day they will be a big hit. Maybe it’s the same thing people saw in Jennifer Lawrence when she starred in Winter’s Bone. Whatever the case, Britt Robertson has been lighting up screens recently with her charismatic and adorably goofy performances.

(There may be spoilers here) Say the words “Pixar film” and everyone knows what you’re talking about. It’s a family friendly animation with surprisingly deep things to say about the human condition, with an engaging story for audiences of all ages. In 2015, twenty years after Pixar first moved into feature films with the release of Toy Story, they’ve got two new films out, with Inside Out first up. But with two years having passed since the last Pixar release, 2013’s Monsters University, have the creative team managed to recapture the magic of their most famous releases? Yes, from perfect happy little short film Lava to final credits.

Warning: There may be spoilers here. In 1984, a young director called James Cameron created a science fiction phenomenon that enhanced our fear of robots and made us all fall in love with Arnold Schwarzenegger. That film was Terminator. The story of a murderous metallic monster sent back in time by the corporation Skynet to kill Sarah Connor before she can birth her son John has been an action packed series that we’ve followed through the good, the bad and the Salvation. But if you think you know the Terminator series, think again. The latest film in the series changes everything on its head. In a special event, we were lucky enough to catch the first bits of footage with the star himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger (after his stint riding a Boris Bike), and here are our initial thoughts; |
