8 Awkward Movie Dinner Scenes

If a film focuses on relationships – especially family relationships – then there’s almost guaranteed to be a dinner scene! The meal time formula is one of the best tools to create tension, awaken awkwardness, or act as a platform for some sort of big reveal.

In reality, I am lucky enough to have a family that generally enjoy peaceful mealtimes where we discuss the occurrences of the day, but I have always been intrigued by the cliché dinner rows you see in film and TV; the family dynamics, the explosive arguments, and the sound of silence only intercepted by the metallic clang of cutlery. It’s a thing of beauty.

So in honour of the many of you sitting down to a Sunday roast with family today, here is a list of some of the best (of the worst) dinner scenes in film.

Documentaries can be brilliant. They can, at times, be even better than fiction because, although fictional films are entertaining and they place you into another reality, into other people’s shoes and are for some a way from escaping or getting away from the real world, some documentaries can be so truthful, so informative and so breathtaking, coupled with the fact that what is being told is real, it can be a very powerful thing. If a documentary is done well, if it is interesting, if it is informative, shot well and focused on what it wants to say, then it could change opinions, mindsets. It doesn’t just have to be an informative, mind-numbing piece like the dull stuff they show in schools. No, it can inspire hundreds, thousands, even millions.

Aliens. Man that would be so cool. You’ll have to be a complete moron not to expect little green men to descend from the skies and invade us for either peaceful or aggressive reasons. In popular culture, it has been the source of intrigue for everyone with varying levels of “what if?" From cute bug-eyed friendships to war, bloody war, there has been every inconceivable imagining of extra-terrestrial’s coming to our terrain and exploring humanity. Heck, there are even stories of UFOs and spaceships darting around rural America - many believing that they were abducted.

But what would actually happen if the beyond came closer to our homes? That is a question attempted to be answered in The Visit.

Headlines from The Congo in Africa portray it as a violent and inhumane place to live. With the spread of fatal disease, civil war and poverty, the mass hardship of the continent is known to the world. Yet in Kristof Bilsen’s documentary, Elephant’s Dream, the filmmaker aims to tell the inner struggles of the people by observing those who work for its public sector in Kinshasa, Africa’s third largest city. In the poetic documentary Bilsen lets the people tell their own stories and also offer reasons as to why their country is in such difficulties.

Concepts are fantastic for films. As a writer, director or producer, sitting on an idea and developing it so eloquently into film is exciting. Ideas come but it takes a lot of determination to execute it well. See that’s the problem - having a base point isn’t enough when you can’t leap into a final product well. A lot of directors have these issues and they steam from either overblowing the script with too many added extras or never bothering to enhance the premise enough for it to be interesting.

Paragraph suffers from the latter and it’s such a dull watch, that you can’t help but wonder what went wrong.

London is a wondrous city. It is full of lights, arts, foods, spectacular sights and more. It is also full of culture. With Dressed as a Girl, the film dives into an intimate look of the East End London drag scene. Directed by London-based Colin Rothbart, the film is a colourful journey that follows key moments in the day-to-day lives of the cast members and their families. A layered film, Dressed as a Girl isn’t your typical documentary.

The Third Man - I'm With Geek Review

(As this is a film from the past, this movie has some spoilers).

“They sure don’t make them like they used to,” is probably what you here from generations before us (or hipsters, now). Sure enough, if you look at the industry now, you’ll lament that the oversaturated market has led to sequels, reboots and remakes that all repeated the same incredibly dull story. See, at this point, we’ve seen it all and we can easily harken back the good old days that was filled with ingenuity; lauding up each film as a riotous success and negating the issues of yesteryear that we have apparently moved on from (for example, racism, misogyny and more are still rife in some films today).

Anyway, I’m digressing.

The point is that there are faults trickling throughout the industry and it seems very pithy to abhor one era whilst negating the issues of another. But let me tell you this, the minute you walk away from Carol Reed’s The Third Man, you cannot help but whisper underneath your breath “damn, they sure don’t make them like they used to.”
