Here at IWG Books, we have been celebrating April Fool’s Day with talks of tricksters, pranksters, jokers and troublemakers, and this article is going to honour the nation’s most favourite twins; Fred and George Weasley. Here at IWG Books, we have been celebrating April Fool’s Day with talks of tricksters, pranksters, jokers and troublemakers, and this article is going to honour the nation’s most favourite twins; Fred and George Weasley. And most coincidently today, the 1st April is their birthday. Quite fitting, isn’t it? By Olivia Grey Happy Mothers Day to all you Mum's, Grandmothers, adopted parents and foster carers out there! Today marks a celebration of all of the mother figures in the world, and the good they do for everyone around them. Today we will treat our Mum's to an evening out or a bunch of flowers simply to say thank you for being you; for being in my life. Here in the Books section we have discussed some great literary mothers, from Louisa May Alcott's 'Marmee' or Mrs March in the novel Little Women who raised her four children on little to nothing while her husband fought in the Civil War, to the adored Molly Weasley who is seen throughout the seven-part Harry Potter saga created by J. K. Rowling. It is somewhat controversial by introducing a list of the five Worst Mothers in Literature on Mothers Day, but they are mother characters after all. Some are which you may love to hate, others you may simply hate! By Gemma Williams Being Emily author, Rachel Gold, has kindly agreed to allow us exclusive access to the cover and blurb of her latest novel, Just Girls. This opportunity was awarded to us after fellow I'm With Geek writer, Olivia Grey, composed a fantastic review of Being Emily for LGBT month in February. As our first look at the new book, I shall be reviewing the blurb and the cover of Just Girls. By Olivia Grey Today marks a special date in history. As many of you will know, today is the first day a same-sex couple can legally marry in England and Wales. Campaigns for this right for equality have been active since the legislation to allow same-sex marriages in England and Wales was passed by Parliament in July 2013, and then coming into force on 13th March 2014. Olivia Grey decided to mark this pioneering day by celebrating a story that also bypassed the ‘norms’ of society, which helps to bring our world up to date with the ever-changing nature we hold together as humankind. We featured this story in our LGBT month in February and because it was such a success with our readership due to a powerfully relatable story, IWG interviewed Rachel Gold, author of the pioneering novel Being Emily. A story which is the first of its kind with a transsexual girl giving it its voice, describing her struggles in raw detail with inequality in a society that is behind with the times. [*Editor Note: There is a glossary at the end for LGBT jargon]. by Olivia Grey Being Emily is a story which is a breath of fresh air and a sign that tells us that the world is on the brink of change. Being ‘different’ in any manner of the phrase, including disability, homosexuality and mental health, is no longer a crime or a display of weakness or ugliness. In today’s world, it is becoming more and more accepted and even more importantly, it is proudly exploited that what makes you different also makes you interesting, and just like everybody else at the same time. by Olivia Grey Born in 1906 as Catherine Ann McMullen, Cookson was one of the best-loved novelists of British history, and her books are still read to this day and enjoyed by her vigilant fan base. Her novels were inspired by her upbringing in South Shields, Tyneside and would become the foundations on which films of the same titles would be built later on in time, as well as TV shows and stage musicals. There are so many books that have made people tear up and cry over the years, both with happiness and sadness. these types of books can be considered the most powerful of all, moving people in many ways all over the world, and here at IWG Books, the Team have come together and share some of the books we love to cry at!
