2/12/2014

Whether you have seen the movie or read the book, there is no escape from the cascade of emotion you feel after coming into contact with a Nicholas Sparks story.

For myself, and for so many of his fans, The Notebook is my favourite to read. I could read all of Sparks' work over and over (and believe me, I do!) but the raw angst of two young lovers from two totally different walks of life really goes one step further for me, and no matter how many times I read and reread, I can never get enough.

Everyone, even those who have avoided the books and/or the films like the plague, knows of the famous love triangle in the second instalment of the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer.

New Moon is once again narrated from the viewpoint of the female protagonist, Isabella 'Bella' Swan, but unlike its predecessor (simply named Twilight), New Moon also contains chapters dedicated and written to.explore the view point of teenage werewolf, Jacob Black. After the events of Twilight, smouldering vampire Edward Cullen leaves the town of Forks and girlfriend Bella in order for her to be safe, to forget about him and be able to lead a normal life. Of course, this does not settle well with Bella and she seeks solace with her new friend, Jacob.

Trudi Canavan, born in 1969, is an Australian writer of fantasy novels, best known for her trilogy The Black Magician. She was nominated several times and won the Aurealis Award, What is the Aurealis Award, i hear you say? Well here comes an interesting fact: The Aurealis Award for excellence in Speculative Fiction is an annual literary award for Australian SciFi,
Fantasy and Horror fiction and their writers and…wait for it - only Australians are eligible for the award!

Canavan’s advice for the aspiring writers is: “The best way to improve your writing is to write. A lot.” In contrast to other fantasy/science fiction authors, Canavan is appreciative of fan fiction – that might be something worth looking into.

Between 2005 and 2006 she has published a trilogy entitled The Age of Five consisting of three volumes: Priestess of the White, Last of the Wilds and Voice of the Gods. In these books we get to know Auraya and Leiard, a couple which proves through their trials and tribulations that no rules are too sacred to be not broken.
