I’m pretty sure that nearly every child, and nearly every adult, knows, or knows of, Clifford the Big Red Dog. Sadly, the author of the famed books, Norman Bridwell, passed away last Friday, at the age of 86. His most famous works were the Clifford, the Big Red Dog books. Sadly, he is not the first children’s author we’ve lost this year. Eric Hill, the author of the Spot the Dog books, passed away earlier in the year.

By Laura W Last week, we started to take a look at some of the saddest moments in literature. This week, we’re continuing that series on, and we’re leaving nothing untouched. Grab those tissues and some comfort food and let’s get a move on. Spoilers abound. By Laura W I think it’s fair to say, that at one point or another, readers have shed a tear (or two, or many) over a scene in a book. Whether it is the death of a beloved character, or something so shocking, nobody was expecting it, books – like films – have the tendency to pull at our heartstrings and capture our emotions. Here are some of the saddest moments in literature. Spoilers ahead. By Laura W Musical theatre fans are getting an extra Christmas present this Christmas, with the film release of Disney’s film version of Into the Woods. Based on the hit musical of the same name, composed by Stephen Sondheim and the book written by James Lapine. The show revolves around several famous fairy tales and how they interact with each other, including Cinderella, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood. But where did the material come from? Hope you’re comfortable, as there is quite a lot of source material! By Laura W I can guarantee you’ve probably read the title and gone, “What in the world is the nutty nanny on about now?” With the upcoming film release of Paddington (a very famous literary bear), fifty specially designed Paddington Bear statues have been placed in a “trail” (smartly titled, The Paddington Trail) in London. Celebrity Paddington designers include Nicole Kidman, David Beckham, Peter Capaldi, and Benedict Cumberbatch. However, what many don’t realize is that there are numerous other statues of famous literary characters around England, and around the world. By Laura W As it’s fall time and Halloween is here, I think it’s the perfect time to have a look at another famous, and classic, horror novel. Of course, there are numerous classic books and the focus won’t be just on horror novels, but I felt this was the perfect time to have a look at Dracula. The famed vampire is the second most portrayed fictional character of all time, after the famed detective Sherlock Holmes. by Laura W Frankenstein has been, and still is, considered one of the greatest horror novels of all time. Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus was written by Mary Shelley and was originally published anonymously in 1818. Mary’s name finally appeared on the second edition, when it was published in France in 1823. The story tells of a brilliant scientist who creates a creature and the subsequent events that follow. What many don’t realize about the novel is that Frankenstein is not actually the name of the creature, but of the man who invented the creature, thus causing a great deal of confusion once people start reading. Let’s have a look at several of the covers of Frankenstein, to see if any actually clear up the confusion. Be warned, spoilers may lie ahead. By Laura W It seems Halloween has started early this year, and that’s all thanks to J. K. Rowling. Announced on the morning of October 24th on Pottermore, it was confirmed to fans that Rowling would be releasing a new story about a certain baddie from the hit series. By Laura W There hasn’t been much to write about in regards to the Nanny Book Project, as I’ve got no real updates. I have had a few responses, but you’ll have to read to the end to find out who’s responded. So, how exactly does The Nanny Book Project work? By Laura W Could it be that Harry Potter is, quite possibly, coming back? Not quite, but J. K. Rowling certainly knows how to make us think as much. Last week, J. K. sent out a mysterious tweet, which consisted of “Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand won’t tolerate this nonsense.” So what exactly did this all mean? |
