Everyone loves the internet. Everyone loves books. So the obvious thing to do would be to throw them both in to a metaphoric mixing bowl and metaphorically mix them together to create a fantastic hybrid of a book article.
Department 19 by Will Hill is one of the best fantasy/action books that I have read in a long time. The narrative follows Jamie Carpenter, a teenage boy whose dad is mysteriously killed and that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. Think you’ve read all you can about vampires, werewolves and all that jazz? You are so wrong. Will Hill puts back some good old blood, thunder and Bram Stoker in to vampire stories. If you loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula but fancy reading something more modern then I highly recommend Department 19. Everyone needs to read this book.
Blood Red Road by Moira Young. More people need to know about this book (basically all books mentioned could be applied to the “twitter” question) because it’s amazing. A friend recommended this to me and I read it after I had finished The Hunger Games trilogy when I was at a loss of what to read next. The main character, Saba, is a headstrong, butt kicking super heroine. If Katniss and Saba were to have a fight, I would want to be as far away as possible because it’s going to be fierce; like Dumbledore versus Voldemort in The Order of the Phoenix fierce. Yes, that fierce.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green does not get enough of my love as it should. After reading this book again, all the emotions I initially felt after reading this book for the first time came rushing back and hit me like a ton of bricks. Will Grayson, in my opinion, is highly under-appreciated by most people who have read it. It is one of the funniest books that I have read whilst also being serious and sensitive about some of the issues in this book. Green writes those messages so they’re still interesting. He doesn’t spell out the messages of his books but leaves it open for interpretation which is one thing that I love about his writing, particularly in Will Grayson.
I have to say it. The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. The title of the book drew me and from the description, I thought that this was going to be an amazing read. Which it was! For the first half of the book. After that, I felt the storyline became very repetitive and predictable to the point where it was just dull. Although, the history chapters on Allan’s life were really interesting but it got to the point where I was more interested in Allan’s life history than the actual plot of the book.
This is a tough one because there are some very beautiful books sitting on my bookshelf. But only one can be Instagram’s Next Top Model. After careful consideration, I have decided that Cassandra Clare and Holly Black’s new release Magisterium: The Iron Trial is picture worthy. Not just picture worthy but read worthy. If you’ve read any other books by Clare then you will know exactly how magical her writing really is. Even if you haven’t read The Mortal Instruments or The Infernal Devices then you can still enjoy this book and then after you have read it, go read her other books! They are equally as beautiful in regards to cover design and writing.
If done right, then I would say The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon would be an absolute knock out as a film. Those who have read it know just how great it really is and I think that it could be the next big thing so a film deal would be right around the corner. And being only the first in the series, The Bone Season has set high standards for the next book, The Mime Order which is expected to be published late January of next year. Honestly, it has set high standards for every sci-fi book I read from now on. You know that feeling where after you read a book, the next couple of books you still compare to that first book? That feeling is constant after The Bone Season!
I don’t think that it will come as much of a surprise when I say the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling *holds for dramatic gasps*. It would be absolutely wonderful just to sit down with these characters and have a real conversation with them. Luna Lovegood, being one of my favourite characters of all time, would be an absolute dream to talk to. Even some of the villains! But let’s face it, no one’s going to want to talk to Umbridge, we all hated her more than we hated Voldemort. To speak with at least one character from Harry Potter would be, don’t hate me for the cliché, pure magic *holds for groans and eye rolls*.
Have you read any of the books above? If so, do you agree with their placement? What books would you place in the categories?
