We all have that one character that jumps to mind when we think of the words ‘strong female’, and Young Adult fiction is full of brave ladies who aren’t afraid to stand their ground and fight for what they believe in! In this new segment in the books section, we will be discussing some of Y/A’s extraordinary young females!
Sophie grows as a character in this trilogy, and there are many things that she does throughout the series which have shocked and made readers think of her in a different light, all whilst their affection for this character grows with every page. There are a few points in this series where you think all hope is lost, and then Sophie comes along, out of the blue and saves the day.
As her previous employers were so horrible and mistreated her before being in the service of the London Institute of Shadowhunters, Sophie bares a disfiguring scar. In the beginning of the series, the main character, Tessa Gray, notices this mark and for some time cannot see anything beyond it. As time goes on, and the two girls become more acquainted and friendly, Clare manages to show the reader that even with the scar, which could be deemed as ‘ugly’, Sophie is still a very beautiful young woman, inside and out.
Born as a Mundane with the Sight (something quite rare), Sophie has known about Shadowhunters and their way of life for a long time, and secretly, all she has ever wanted was to become one. But because of her loyalty to Charlotte Branwell, Head of the London Institute (and therefore Sophie’s employer), she has never attempted to pursue her desires because she believes that there is no reason to put her out of a good maid. Saying that, you never know, she may get her happy ending in some way.
Sophie Collins is a character that is sadly overlooked and doesn’t get enough appreciation that she should get. She is strong, witty, and surprisingly excellent when wielding a mirror as a weapon. Watch out for this young lady in The Infernal Devices trilogy, she is a favourite among the fandom!
