I have a feeling this is going to be one of the most painful (no pun intended) articles I’ve ever had to write. With a film adaptation being released on February of this year, we might as well take a look at the original material. I’m terribly sorry, in advance, for any puns that may come up in this article. All of them are VERY much unintentional. SPOILERS abound.
The story (and trilogy) originally developed from a fan fiction series which revolved round Twilight. The fan fiction series dealt with two characters named Bella and Edward (how coincidental). EL James removed the story from the fan fiction sites, due to the sexual nature. It was published independently and the main characters had their names changed to Anastasia and Christian.
Reception, critical and somewhat otherwise, has been mixed to poor. Many, including those involved in BDSM, as well as many who have dealt with abuse (both victims and professionals who assist victims), have criticized it. It has also been criticized for plagiarizing many topics from Twilight (but that’s another article entirely).
The film is due to be released on February 13th, 2015 (which happens to be a Friday – good luck to them!). It stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia and Christian, respectively. The film will also star Luke Grimes, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora and Eloise Mumford. I guess we know what many will be doing for Valentine’s Day!
