In news that will delight Rainbow Rowell fans and internet denizens everywhere, hit teen novel Fangirl is getting a spin-off! Yes, Rowell’s story of fan fiction and devotion is being followed up by a book focusing on the object of hero Cath’s adoration, the Simon Snow series.
Instantly relatable to many readers in the internet age, with a joyous celebration of fanworks rather than a mocking demonisation, Fangirl was a triumph. One of the key aspects of the novel was the interspersions of Cath’s most ambitious fan fiction, Carry On Simon.
But now, Rowell has announced, we get to read Cath’s story in its entirety! Titled Carry On, the book will be published in October 2015. It’s an interesting situation to be in, after the whole debate on adapting fan fiction into original work as with 50 Shades of Grey. But Carry On is a novel based on a fan fiction contained in a real novel about a fake book series, and all properties are still wholly Rowell’s (despite obvious similarities to Harry Potter). One thing’s for certain, it is sure to be a fascinating experiment.
While there has not been an official announcement as of yet, Rowell had this to say on Twitter to any potential doubters.
I’m not trolling you. I mean, I WOULD troll you. But I’m not right now: Real live Simon Snow book. PLUS MORE FANGIRL NEWS LATER THIS WEEK! - @rainbowrowell
