Agatha Christie’s legacy lives on. One of the best-selling crime fiction authors of all times, if the idea of selling more than two billion copies of one’s novels is even conceivable, brought something to this world – a unique talent, exceptional penmanship, a mysterious mind - that is not to be surpassed, but certainly is set to inspire through generations. If there is such a place called |Heaven though, Christie must be smiling upon us knowing that one of the most famous and loved characters that she created will be in good hands and – detective Hercule Poirot – will be resurrected and once again engaged in exciting investigations. How, one may wonder?

Agatha Christie’s legacy lives on. One of the best-selling crime fiction authors of all times, if the idea of selling more than two billion copies of one’s novels is even conceivable, brought something to this world – a unique talent, exceptional penmanship, a mysterious mind - that is not to be surpassed, but certainly is set to inspire through generations. If there is such a place called |Heaven though, Christie must be smiling upon us knowing that one of the most famous and loved characters that she created will be in good hands and – detective Hercule Poirot – will be resurrected and once again engaged in exciting investigations. How, one may wonder? by Agnieszka Ramian Count-down goes on and it is only few weeks left till much awaited The Discworld Convention 2014 combined with The Ankh-Morpork Grand Exhibition (coincidental mix, so they jokingly say). The event taking place from the 8th to 11th of August at the Palace Hotel, in Manchester, UK, has SOLD OUT already. The comers from all over the world are expected, which makes it even harder to acknowledge the announcement that Sir Terry Pratchett had made on the Convention’s official web page: http://www.dwcon.org/ . We are very sorry to share this news with you, but the most anticipated guest will not be able to attend a four-day long celebration in his honour. By Laura W Happy Canada Day! When it’s announced that a person, or several people, are receiving the Order of Canada, it’s basically a very exciting time here in Ottawa, and all throughout Canada. This year’s recipients range from a comedian to a spaceman. Amongst the recipients this year is Guy Gavriel Kay, author of numerous novels, which have sold over two million copies and have been translated into 22 languages. By Agnieszka Ramian In the next few minutes you are going to make yourselves familiar with Haruki Murakami’s new novel to be released by Harvill Secker publishing that incorporates the most aberrant but refreshing marketing initiative we have come across in the book industry. First, you would wonder whether it is the author’s quirkiness breaking out. Then, you will most likely come to conclusion that it must be a children’s publication. The answers however are ‘NO’ and ‘NO’, which you will realize shortly. By Agnieszka Ramian A publishing legend and famed entrepreneur, Felix Dennis, sadly passed away on the 22nd June at his home in Dorsington after a“long and painful battle with cancer” . We face a departure of a man of many talents and a great source of creative initiatives he had been taking throughout his life. He will be sorely missed, but remembered for countless notable deeds and achievements. By Agnieszka Ramian First awarded in 1976, the annual British Fantasy Awards are running for another consecutive year. Administrated by The British Fantasy Society, they see great and well-established artists competing against upcoming and promising ones under various categories. It is beyond the tough choice to select the winners, but the jury has already made an attempt to do so by narrowing the list of participants to four nominees per category (with the exception for the Best Short Story category that holds two inseparable stories that were both short-listed) plus no more than two further nominees in each category, added by the juries as “egregious omissions” under the rules. Book related categories seem to be making up the biggest part of the competition. This year, awards for writers will be presented to the winners under seven exciting categories, as presented below. By Agnieszka Ramian If you were author Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket (his pen name that originates from A Series of Unfortunate Events where it appears as both a character and narrator), you could surely afford establishing an annual prize worth of $3,000 (£1,800) for whoever you think should be getting the award. To Handler, it is librarians who are in a serious need of being rewarded and recognised for what they do. According to him “Librarians have suffered enough" and therefore a new annual US prize will be "honouring a librarian who has faced adversity with integrity and dignity intact". "This seems like a better way to channel money to librarians than my previous strategy, which was incurring exorbitant late fees", he adds. The winner of the first Lemony Snicket Prize has recently been named! By Graeme Stirling Just when you thought you were safe, Helen Fielding strikes again. Should you be unfamiliar with the author, you’ll doubtlessly have heard of her protagonist, Bridget Jones. In fact, if her social media-embracing publishers get their way, you’ll be hearing that name a lot more in the coming days. By Gemma Williams It's been 11 years, but finally, Donna Tartt has released her third novel, The Goldfinch and it has already been selected as one of the best 10 books of 2013. What a comeback. The book, which was out for sale in October 2013, and finally, it's been released in paperback! By Agnieszka Ramian Have you had enough of Mr Mercedes by Stephen King yet? No, of course not! Readers who decided to go for it might be at different stages of this deliciously created novel’s consumption: be it waiting-on-the-delivery, reading-in-progress, engulfed-already, but certainly latest news will shake everyone’s worlds equally. Stephen King is a master of building the tension on many levels. The dust has not even settled yet, as it has only been 10 days after Mr Mercedes’ much anticipated release, but water in this pot simply needs to keep boiling. What is it that he has got prepared for us this time? |
