Just one more day before Mr Mercedes is here and some of the mysteries are unveiled. It is day four of the short book trailers that are being published and there's only one more left to go. For those who have just joined the countdown, the idea is that King's existing book characters, which at this point are widely recognized if not a classic figure of the horror/thriller genre, introduce Mr Mercedes by throwing some clues and making references to motives relevant to the novel they have come from. Trailer four we owe to Andy from Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
With trailer four, the row of somewhat dark characters breaks and a good guy steps out. It is obvious enough that the scene shows the inside of the prison where rats are common companions. So, “What could be more valuable, more powerful than knowledge?” Is it bars, which take away from the man their freedom, at least physically? Is it money? Is it the right tool or possibly the faith, which The Bible could imply? Is it being cunning? Andy is an example of the man who uses all those things in the right way and in the right moment and his moves are based on thought out calculations. Being a banker in his previous life, Andy holds the knowledge about taxation and other financial procedures, which gains him recognition amongst both prisoners and guards and makes him impossible to ignore. While being a model prisoner, this decent man holds the Bible for reasons far more complex than just being religious. All of that, mixed in with the right proportions and held by the right man, gets him redemption.
Now, if we reverse everything and the murder was actually committed; what is more, it is not a decent man anymore that we are dealing with and he is more than willing to use his influential power for the wrong cause? Will it mean Mr Mercedes’ damnation being the opposite of redemption? Or is it simply implied that he will be a man of great knowledge and shining intellect, who will engage all his resources into making the most sophisticated and exceptionally cruel plans happen, stage after stage? What is it that waits at the end of that tunnel? I guess we will have to wait and find out.
