Well, The Tonys are done for another year, sadly. However, the nice thing with Tony coverage is it lasts for another few weeks. Sunday, June 7th was a truly epic night. There were a few obvious wins, such as Fun Home winning for Best Musical (and the most awards of the night) and Helen Mirren snagging another Best Performance by a Leading Actress Tony for her performance as (who else) Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience. There’s a reason people have started calling that particular award the Helen Mirren Award.
Technical awards ranged, as the Tonys are noted not just for their acting awards, but their vast array of technical awards. Best Costume Design Awards went to The King and I and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. Scenic Design went to An American in Paris and The Curious Incident. Best Choreography went to Christopher Wheeldon for An American in Paris, and Best Revivals went to Skylight (play) and The King and I.
The Tonys are such a diverse awards show, and also one of the most inclusive. The awards span across a variety of topics, and include a variety of shows. While the awards aren’t always awarded to the people who SHOULD win (such is the way of awards show), they’re usually spot on.
Bring on 2016!
