Back in 2011, Nike created 1,500 limited edition replica self-tying shoes from Back to the Future Part 2 to raise money for the Michael J Fox Foundation for the study of Parkinson’s and the whole world rejoiced. Finally people were going to be able to get a hold of one of the most iconic pairs of shoes in the history of cinema. However, things were not as they seemed and the shoes weren’t as self-tying as originally thought. They looked awesome, but you still had to do them up on your own. Almost $6 million was raised for a great cause through the auction of these shoes, so we can’t really complain.
"Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!"
Now what this actually means is yet to be confirmed, but the fact he has used the terminology from Back to the Future II is rather impressive in its own fact. It is nice to see Nike finally making some headway after taking out a patent for self-tying laces in 2010, in which it stated that:
“The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.”
I really hope that Nike aren’t just teasing us with this news, because as soon as we get power laces it should only be a matter of time before rehydrating pizza, Jaws 19 and hover boards!
