What do awards season, 2014, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes and Neil Patrick Harris all have in common? Not a whole lot. Well, that’s not all true - they all involve the stage. Here’s a quick theatre round up for all those theatre nuts and if you’re a fan of Sherlock, you may want to pay attention.

Awards season isn’t quite over - The Oliviers are quickly approaching. The Oliviers will be held on April 13, 2014 from London’s Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), and will broadcast later that night on ITV, with a full highlights package. The show will be hosted by Gemma Arteton, who will be appearing later this year in the new musical Made in Dagenham, and Stephen Mangan, who is appearing in the Olivier nominated Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense. This year’s voiceover will be done by none other than Julie Walters, a previous Olivier Award winner. Presenters include Samantha Barks, Kristin Davis, Mark Strong, Ruth Wilson, Dame Gillian Lynne, Dame Penelope Keith and many, many more.

Also appearing at the Oliviers, in a special performance, will be Broadway legend and Sondheim inspiration, Bernadette Peters. Also performing will be Joseph Calleja, one of the most in demand opera singers of the past few years. Calleja will be closing the first half of the ceremony with  the performance of E lucevan le stele from Puccini’s Tosca. There will be exclusive performances from all four nominated Best Musicals. There will also be performances from Phantom of the Opera, Matilda, Les Miserables and Wicked. It will definitely be a show to watch.

Now, Sherlock and Shakespeare. How exactly do these two tie together? Not much, unless you happened to here a certain announcement that was made earlier this week. The announcement confirmed what many had been hearing for ages - Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the lead role in Hamlet.  His role will cover the course of a twelve week period (August 5th through October 31st 2015) at the Barbican Centre. Fans need not worry too much, the Barbican is a large theatre, so seating shouldn’t be a problem. The performance will be directed by Lyndsey Turner (director of Olivier nominated Chimerica). More details will be released in May.

In other stage news, it’s been fairly quiet. The biggest news is that Hugh Jackman will be returning to host the Tony’s for this year. A multiple award winner, including several Tony’s, this will be Hugh’s fourth time hosting the awards, taking over from last year’s host, Neil Patrick Harris. Speaking of Neil Patrick Harris, the first image of him as Hedwig has been released and he looks right in character. Neil will be starring, starting next month, as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This marks Neil’s return to the stage in nearly 10 years.

Stay tuned for for more updates - the Tony’s aren’t that far away!
