The 68th Annual Tony Awards took place on Sunday 8th with some definite standout moments, and with Hugh Jackman hosting the ceremonies for the fourth time, we were in for some entertaining times. While the opening number was fun, many were hoping this year’s opening might be bigger, so much bigger (credit if you get the reference!). There was also criticism on how Hugh hardly had any screen time, despite being the host. However, an award record was set, when Audra McDonald won her SIXTH Tony Award! And fun was still on the menu.
The 68th Annual Tony Awards took place on Sunday 8th with some definite standout moments, and with Hugh Jackman hosting the ceremonies for the fourth time, we were in for some entertaining times. While the opening number was fun, many were hoping this year’s opening might be bigger, so much bigger (credit if you get the reference!). There was also criticism on how Hugh hardly had any screen time, despite being the host. However, an award record was set, when Audra McDonald won her SIXTH Tony Award! And fun was still on the menu.
The two big honours went to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder (Best Musical) and All The Way (Best Play). The revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch won for Best Revival of a Musical, with A Raisin in the Sun snagged Best Revival of a Play. Neil Patrick Harris and Lena Hall won Best Leading Actor and Best Featured Actress respectively, in a musical, for their roles in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. James Monroe Iglehart won for Best Featured Actor for his role as Genie in Aladdin, and Jessie Mueller won for Best Leading Actress in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Other acting awards went to Audra McDonald, Bryan Cranston, Mark Rylance and Sophie Okonedo, all for their roles in plays.
Other winners include Warren Carlyle (Best Choreography, After Midnight), Jason Robert Brown (Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, The Bridges of Madison County), and Robert L. Freedman (Best Book of a Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder). Technical awards included (Best Costume Design, A Gentleman’s Guide), Christopher Barreca (Best Scenic Design, Rocky the Musical), and Natasha Katz (Best Lighting Design for a Play, The Glass Menagerie).
While the ceremony was a bit of a let down (we can’t entirely blame Hugh – the writers and creative team let him down badly), we did get some awesome moments and outstanding performances. Moments included Hugh Jackman rapping with T.I. and LL Cool J, Hugh dancing with each nominee in the Best Leading Actress in a Musical category, and Jefferson Mays’ quick-change act. The best performance of the night was, of course, Neil Patrick Harris’ and the cast of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Other outstanding performances included Jessie Mueller’s number from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and the performance from the cast of After Midnight.
