The world’s highest grossing animated film of all time is heading to the Great White Way (no pun intended). Disney’s goliath, Frozen, has proved so popular, that it’s being turned into a Broadway Musical! After winning a Golden Globe and two Oscars, Walt Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger announced that the show will eventually hit Broadway, though he added that they are not focused on speed, but quality. If it takes a little longer for the show to develop, so be it.

Loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale, The Snow Queen, Frozen tells the story of two princess sisters, Anna and her magical older sister, Elsa. After an accident in their youth, Else is shut away from the world for fear of her secret getting out, but after the death of her parents, she becomes Queen. During the coronation, Elsa’s icy powers erupt and turn her kingdom to ice, leading Else to go on the run and it’s left to Anna to find her and restore the kingdom. Voice talents include Idina Menzel (Elsa), Kristen Bell (Anna), Jonathan Groff, Santino Fontana, and Josh Gad. I’m personally rooting for Josh Gad to bring his role of the lovable, summer-obsessed snowman Olaf, to life on the stage.
The film’s popularity knocked previous higher earner Toy Story 3 from the top spot, and even outdid the 20 year old classic, The Lion King, which was also turned into the highest earning Broadway show of all time. Disney seems to know what they’re doing when it comes to stage shows, with an impressive roster including Aladdin (which recently won a Tony), Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid.
This is a musical that could actually work, given the popularity of the source material. It’s a good thing that they’re aiming for quality, instead of speed, as that means more work and dedication will be put into it. Stay frosty for more Frozen news.
