The show East is East is being revived and this time, it’s sort of special. The author of the play, Ayub Khan Din is starring in it. The play is the second in Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar Transformed Season following Richard III, starring Martin Freeman.

East is East premiered at the Royal Court before being made into an extremely popular, and much loved, film, and is returning to the stage after 17 years away. The story revolves around George “Genghis” Khan, and his determination to bring his children up in a strict Muslim household, in 1970’s Salford. Things come to a head when George’s wife, and the kids mother, Ella, gets caught between the children’s free will and her loyalty to her husband.
Sam Yates, who most recently directed The El Train, starring Ruth Wilson, will direct the show. Sam trained with fellow directors Jamie Lloyd, Trevor Nunn, and Phyllida Lloyd. The play will star Jane Horrocks and Ayub Khan Din. Jane’s stage credits include Annie Get Your Gun and The Good Soul of Szechuan (both at The Young Vic). Other shows include The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Absurd Person Singular, and Aunt Dan Lemon. She was nominated for numerous awards for her role in Little Voice.
East is East will run from October 4th, 2014 to January 3rd, 2015 at Trafalgar Studios. Tickets are on sale now.
