Review: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Book 2, Act 7 – 11

By Gemma Williams

Book two of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series is headed by Ami, or Sailor Mercury, giving the book a blue colour theme on top of the basic white used for all of the books. Her chibi self is on the back cover and the reader is treated to five new acts in this volume: seven to eleven.

In this book, we are introduced to a few new characters while learning more about the existing members we’ve already become acquainted with. The Sailor Scouts uncover secrets about Tuxedo Mask, they are reunited with a team member and discover memories about their past and the Moon Kingdom.

As with Volume One, the artwork as a whole is beautiful and can often distract from the story, especially as you’re battling confusion about what is happening in some of the panels; mostly the action scenes. There are times when a face is drawn on an angle and ruins the artwork. It’s ugly, as the proportions of the face are wrong and it looks amateurish compared with the usual standard.

The story moves swiftly, thankfully, as this book dragged a little at times and this story arch is so emotional and devastating at times that you just want to reach the conclusion for a sense of closure. Though the tale is about a supernatural group of people, mostly teenage girls, some of their obstacles are highly relatable. I’m sure many girls will read about Sailor Moon’s problems and see a reflection of their actions at some point during their teen years.

Usagi was aggravating and useless as she still prioritises her love over the safety of the world. Thankfully, Sailor Venus is the leader of the Scouts, otherwise nothing would ever be done! Usagi does go through some much needed and appreciated development towards the end when she seems to realise what is really important and changes her course of action to do the logical thing! She’s a very illogical character and this can be frustrating to read, especially when her logical team mates are babying her.

There was a little bit of character development for the other characters in this volume. I now have a better feel for them as individual people, instead of them just being back up. Sailor Mars is one of the least seen, yet strongest and most sensible of the girls; Venus is clumsy but quite intelligent and focused; Mercury is highly intelligent; and Jupiter is strong and caring. We need to see more of them and hopefully this will occur soon, as Usagi is annoying and I doubt she’s a strong enough character to carry the series on her own. Mars has already started taking vocal jabs at her, refusing to pander to her every whim and lazy attitude.

Overall, the book was enjoyable, as was book one, and the volumes are well made. The story is fast paced and will break your heart into a million pieces. It’s a lot darker than you would expect from a story about teenage girls from the Moon with powers and it’s a shock to the system, but it also creates the need to read on to stop feeling so bad for those involved.
