Get excited people, DC has unveiled a new Bat-Symbol to commemorate 75 years of Batman! Over the years there has been so many different symbols which represented the relevant time of Batman, but which were your favourites? by Jade Lindley Are you sick of hearing about the same ol' villains from Gotham's Rogue Gallery? As awesome as it is reading up about The Joker, Penguin and Catwoman, one must ask, is it getting a little repetitive? As a Batman comic reader since the age of 5, I have always been interested in the villains, and as I hit my teens I was interested in the psyche behind each one of Batman's adversaries. I wanted to know what drives them to do the evil things they do, and what runs through their mind in doing so. And as much as I do love the more well known villains who tend to be given the spotlight a little more, there is one villain which has stood out for me for years and that is Victor Zsasz. by Jade Lindley There are many brilliant comic book stories out there, written by so many wonderful writers accompanied by beautiful artistry and coloured with a multi-layered depth; it’s those elements that make Midnight Circus one of the most memorable stories I have read to date. The first time I read Midnight Circus, I was in so much awe; I couldn’t believe what I had just read. Mike Mignola has created a wonderful character with Hellboy, and while he is an intriguing character as an adult, seeing his vulnerability and curiosity as a child is just as entrancing to read; it’s one of the reasons this story stands out. Midnight Circus is such an appealing story because of the fact that it mirrors childhood as well as incorporating the dark tale that is Pinocchio. by Jade Lindley Remember those 1980’s cartoons which made you so excited with colours, awesome fire up music and just overall a good storyline of good vs evil? Imagine reading it in comic book form as an adult and having awesome flashbacks to your childhood…it’s a DAMN awesome feeling! Nitro Battlers is a throwback to everything an 80’s and 90’s kids grew up loving while managing to maintain a strong sense of heart. by Jade Lindley Going on with your life without the person you love is tough. Whether it's them not knowing how you really feel, you being afraid to tell them, or just out right rejection; it's hard. But what is harder is seeing the one you love grow older right before your eyes, and you could end that by simply making them like you. With each breath that they take, it's as if they are inviting death into their lungs, into their heart, into their whole being. And with each day that passes, you have to watch them leave you. Now reverse the coin and imagine you are the one who can't make time go slower. Imagine being so in love, so whole and complete yet knowing you will never get to spend an eternity with them. You would be thinking an array of things. Will they ever love someone as much as they have loved you? Will they be okay? Will your eventual demise break their heart, the way it breaks yours slowly with each day that passes? American Vampire Volume 2, has two stories that are very different and overlap in such a smooth and subtle way. Yet it's the story of the love and inevitable heart break between Pearl and Henry that really stands out. by Jade Lindley Imagine having big dreams, a passion, a goal that you are aiming for, something you would do just about anything to hold in your grasp and know it belongs to you. Imagine aiming so high for that, that you lose your common sense and you forget to protect yourself. The bright lights in Hollywood and empty promises are what lure you in and for your naivety, you are punished. It’s these very things that punish the character of Pearl in the exceptionally gritty yet classy, American Vampire. American Vampire is a timeline of how the vampire evolves and how they came to be and how they choose to live their lives according to what put them there in the first place. Scott Snyder and Stephen King team up and construct two very different stories of how our two protagonists came to be craving that Type A blood. And while these two stories are very unique, and are both set in two different times, they do crash into each other and the timeline of the American Vampire grows. by Jade Lindley Oh it's that time again where I get excited for the smell, and the look of pretty new comics! I thought everything in my life up that point was crystal clear. I saw a direction and that is where I was going, and like a bullet train I had no intention of stopping. And then out of nowhere, I crashed into Hellboy. Hellboy was something I saw from a distance, I was curious but never really explored what it had to offer. Was I too busy? Possibly. Was I writing it off automatically? A little. Was I scared there could be something more emotionally nourishing than anything I had previously experienced with comics? Oh shit yeah. I started working at a comic book store and I noticed something straight away; so many people picked up Hellboy trades but never bothered to open up and take a look inside them and see what possible treasures they might have to offer. |
