To The Last Man [Part 3 of 3]
The horror increases exponentially for the town of Payton, Arizona. Undead hell is unleashed in one swift move as Abe bears witness to it all. He is seen in one panel, stricken with grief and overlooking from shadows, while the narration reads “you’re doomed to find neither friendship nor loyalty”, a line spoken in a different place yet sits perfectly in the context of Abe’s current situation with  his change, the events in Payton and the adage of this title since its re-inception.

Welcome to the first official installment of The New Guy, my monthly rant on various classic graphic novels from the perspective of a comic newbie. This inaugural jaunt will be focusing on Warren Ellis’ treatise on…. well, everything: Transmetropolitan.

Ellis brings us the story of Spider Jerusalem, a journalist in self-imposed exile, who is forced back into the city to face the grim dystopian realities there contained. It reads like Hunter S. Thompson trapped in a Philip K. Dick nightmare. There are storyline arcs, but narrative is not really the focus of this work. Most page space is taken by Jerusalem’s insane ranting. The result is a thinly veiled excuse for Ellis to express his views through a medium. I mean, obviously all writers express themselves, their values and morals, through their characters, but Spider Jerusalem is literally a soapbox.

 THE WAKE #6

I gave up. I gave up trying to guess what could be in store with this issue - and I’m really glad I did, because this world has unfolded in a totally different manner that I could never have expected. 

We are now in the last half of this 10-part series, and now we are fully introduced to Leeward, our new protagonist. It is 200 years later, in a world and landscape changed beyond recognition. Snyder and Murphy have even created new colloquialisms for this new world, and new infrastructure.

Going on with your life without the person you love is tough. Whether it's them not knowing how you really feel, you being afraid to tell them, or just out right rejection; it's hard. But what is harder is seeing the one you love grow older right before your eyes, and you could end that by simply making them like you. With each breath that they take, it's as if they are inviting death into their lungs, into their heart, into their whole being. And with each day that passes, you have to watch them leave you. 

Now reverse the coin and imagine you are the one who can't make time go slower. Imagine being so in love, so whole and complete yet knowing you will never get to spend an eternity with them. You would be thinking an array of things. Will they ever love someone as much as they have loved you? Will they be okay? Will your eventual demise break their heart, the way it breaks yours slowly with each day that passes? 

American Vampire Volume 2, has two stories that are very different and overlap in such a smooth and subtle way. Yet it's the story of the love and inevitable heart break between Pearl and Henry that really stands out.

Imagine having big dreams, a passion, a goal that you are aiming for, something you would do just about anything to hold in your grasp and know it belongs to you. Imagine aiming so high for that, that you lose your common sense and you forget to protect yourself. The bright lights in Hollywood and empty promises are what lure you in and for your naivety, you are punished. It’s these very things that punish the character of Pearl in the exceptionally gritty yet classy, American Vampire. 


American Vampire is a timeline of how the vampire evolves and how they came to be and how they choose to live their lives according to what put them there in the first place. Scott Snyder and Stephen King team up and construct two very different stories of how our two protagonists came to be craving that Type A blood. And while these two stories are very unique, and are both set in two different times, they do crash into each other and the timeline of the American Vampire grows.

The Last Man is the best hope for the continuation of our species.

I was fresh on the comic scene when I held that first volume. I mean, I’m still fresh by almost all modes of comparison but I was green, garden herbs green. So, I didn’t quite understand how significant an item I was holding. I had done the same thing I assume everyone does these days when they discover a new passion. I had opened up to the public forum that is social media and asked that most ill conceived of questions: “What’s good?”

Of course, the reply was an incongruous torrent of fan-boy rant, drool and vitriol, which left me more confused than before I had asked. There were a few consistent sparks of hope. One name that kept popping up was ‘Y’. “You must read Y.” “Y is the truth.” It continued like this for a while, filling my feed, but by this point I had moved on to an Archer-esque rampage through the work of Bendis and thus it came to pass that it was filed back there with Preacher and Transmetropolitan as holy ground yet untilled.
