If you like more than a little creepiness in your comics, Pumpkinface – Origins, promises a deeply complex, fright-filled read.

Written by Graeme Buchan, author of Creepy Scarlett, Pumpkinface was originally created as a character for a short horror film, before becoming a staple baddie in the Creepy Scarlett series. Introduced in Creepy Scarlett vs. Pumpkinface, the character is a vicious serial killer, who works as an assassin for Vincent, Scarlett’s nemesis and the head of The Order of the Red Sun. Tasked with capturing Scarlett, who resides in a graveyard and battles the evil doings of the Order with her faithful teddy-bear, Mr. Ted, the story follows his attempts to trap our heroine, who repeatedly evades his clutches.

With his nightmare-inducing mask and psychotic tendencies, Pumpkinface is definitely a character from the darker side of comics. And it was always Buchan’s intention to give him his own comic book, where his twisted psyche could be unravelled, and his origins explored in-depth. Having begun a kickstarter campaign, Buchan now hopes to make his project a reality, with the release of Pumpkinface - Origins scheduled for Halloween 2014.

Set in Edinburgh in the early 1900s, Pumpkinface – Origins tells the story of Jack, the man who would become the monster. Unstable and damaged beyond repair, the tale centres on the relationship between Jack and his psychologist Dr Lutwitdge, and unfolds in the asylum where Jack is a patient. Hell-bent on revenge, the story tracks his treatment as he shares the details of his family’s murder, in the hope of finding clues as to the identity of the killer. As the story continues however, Buchan reveals the increasingly confused line between fact and fiction in Jack’s mind, and vividly depicts his descent into madness as he retreats further behind the mask, to become the Pumpkinface we know today.

Dark and disturbing, Pumpkinface – Origins takes you on a journey inside the mind of one of Buchan’s creepiest characters. With art by Antonio Brandau, colour by Sean Burres, lettering by Jessica Jimerson and flat colour by Anthony Cuizon, the comic combines the skills of five fresh talents from across the globe. The result is a beautifully original work that will keep you sleeping with the light on.
