Marvel unveil new Muslim-American Ms Marvel character as part of Marvel NOW
Marvel Comics are never ones to shy away from a ground-breaking storyline or character and this February they are set to continue that trend with the debut of an all-new, Muslim Ms. Marvel as part of the company’s next Marvel NOW! initiative.
Ms. Marvel will center on 16-year-old Kamala Khan, a Muslim-American teenager living in Jersey City, New Jersey. “At her core, Kamala is just a 16-year-old girl, exploring the many facets of her identity when she is suddenly bestowed with super-human powers that send her on the adventure of a lifetime,” says Marvel Comics Editor In Chief Axel Alonso.
Written by G. Willow Wilson (Air, Mystic, Alif The Unseen) whose writings about modern religion have appeared in the New York Times’ Magazine and The Atlantic with art from critically-acclaimed artist Adrian Alphona (Runaways, Uncanny X-Force) Ms. Marvel #1 blasts off this February and will be available via ComiXology and the Marvel Comics app!
Valiant to debut Unity crossover event
This week Valiant Comics are set to unveil their first epic crossover event with Unity #1 which sees a host of Valiant’s most powerful characters combine forces to take on the mighty X-O Manowar. One of the most critically acclaimed publishers on the market right now, Valiant Comics returned in 2011 resurrecting classic 90s characters like X-O Manowar, Harbinger and Ninjak for a 21st century audience.

However Toyo Harada, the world’s most dangerous man, has other ideas and forms an elite group to take down the mighty X-O Manowar.
As with all Valiant Comics titles, each issue of Unity is available via ComiXology as an exclusive digital edition with exclusive bonus material.

Template (QAM Comics)
QAM Comics new sci-fi action comic Template is one of the fantastic new Guided View Native titles now available on ComiXology. Written by Quinton Miles with art by Andres Quezada it tells the story of Beta, an android template of super agent Ina Britt, created by private security company Oversight. As Oversight struggle to get her to follow protocol (and not end up like her rogue predecessor Alpha) Beta is struggling with self-awareness and her willingness to get into the field. Mixing elements of Wolverine and Captain America with a dose of Metal Gear Solid and the Matrix, Template is a slick and smart cyberpunk thriller that belies the indie sensibilities of it’s creators and thoroughly deserves it’s spot on the front page of ComiXology alongside titans like Wolverine and Batman.
Template #1 and #2 are available from ComiXology for £0.69/$0.99 each

Joshua Hale Fialkov and Joe Infurnari’s self-published digital comic is a bleak dystopian slice of hard-edged sci-fi. As 6 friends discover a hatch leading to a bunker their lives begin to take an unwelcome turn as they discover a series of letters from their future selves explaining the dark and twisted way the world and their lives have turned out. But not everyone gets letters and do they want to know why not? Dealing with issues of fate, morality and determinism, the book throws off it’s relatively formulaic set-up to create a smart and articulate story which resists pulling it’s punches thanks to it’s self-publishing model. With a split timeline narrative that spreads over their future selves and the present day, Fialkov’s writing is as smart and articulate as ever with Infurnari’s scratchy monochrome artwork giving the book a really bleak look and feel. If you’re after a sci-fi story that challenges you as much as it entertains then this is the book for you.
The Bunker #1-4 are available from ComiXology for £1.49/$1.99 per issue
War of the Woods
Matthew Petz’s War of the Woods is such a startlingly simple and original idea that you cannot believe it hasn’t been done before. The story of Phin the otter, his father Nathaniel and their friend Isaac the turtle may start off as a cutesy animal story but soon morphs into something completely unique as aliens invade their quite New Jersey habitat. With Phin believing he is the only one who can save the earth from these invading monsters, War of the Woods mixes Wind in the Willows with Lord of the Rings and Independence Day to create a book that is packed full of pathos and emotion alongside action and adventure galore. Now in it’s second season, War of the Woods also makes fantastic use of ComiXology’s Guided View technology to make reading the adventures of Phin and co a true delight.
War of Woods Season 1 is available from ComiXology for £3.99/$4.99 while issues #1-4 of Season 2 are available for £0.69/$0.99
