It’s time to take a look at some of the upcoming releases soon to hit comic book shelves across the country. There’s a lot of exciting new stuff coming our way, including a rather epic journey for sci-fi fans in a galaxy far far away…
STAR WARS: JOURNEY TO THE FORCE AWAKENS (Marvel/Disney/Lucasfilm)
It’s fair to say that it’s a very good time to be a Star Wars fan. Anticipation for the upcoming movie is already dangerously close to global hysteria, the Disney animated series Rebels is a surprisingly entertaining watch and due to a multi-million dollar takeover, Star Wars comics are back in their rightful home at Marvel (who said heartless corporations and their huge monopolising franchises didn’t have an upside). Now it seems there’s even more good news to add to the list with starwars.com and Marvel releasing a first look at a new series that will fill the blanks and bridge the void between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Journey to the Force Awakens will be comprised of both comics and novels, with the first comic book release entitled Shattered Empire #1 (check out the cover by Phil Noto on starwars.com). The series is set for release in September, which gives the team at Marvel and Disney /Lucasfilm plenty of time to plan out every tiny detail in full. The series promises to be wholly in canon with the original six movies and the upcoming seventh. The rather far off release date may give the team at Marvel time to dream up a slightly more imaginative title as well – whilst it’s very informative, Journey to the Force Awakens doesn’t really get your heart racing does it?!
Other titles in the series will include - Smugglers Run: A Han Solo Adventure and The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure.
Sci-fi comic fans have been turning to Image in droves in recent years following a string of hugely successful titles including Saga and Shutter. These two and others have offered readers awe inspiring cosmic art and wondrously immersive narratives, heavily driven by emotive and relatable characters. Descender looks to be no different in this sense: written by Jeff Lemire (Hawkeye) and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Li’l Gotham) the story follows the trials of a young android boy, fighting through a universe where all robots are strictly outlawed and ruthlessly hunted down by bounty hunters.
Image have dubbed this one a total space opera and managed to stir up quite a bit of interest during the release of #1. They stirred up so much interest in fact, that the fairly limited printing run for the first issue has already sold out completely worldwide! A second printing of #1 is on the cards and should hit shops April 1st, with the already highly anticipated #2 set for release the week after. With rumours of movie rights already being sought after, this could be one to watch in the future. Stay tuned for a review of Descender later this month.
You have to feel a little for the guys over at Dark Horse: Marvels gain at the Disney/Lucasfilm buyout has undoubtedly been their loss. It’s not to say that Star Wars was the shining jewel in their publishing crown, but it was a massive title in their roster list, leaving a rather large pair of Stormtrooper boots to fill.
Needless to say, the guys at Dark Horse aren’t being negative, and whilst they’ve lost one band of hearty rebels, bravely battling the forces of an evil empire, they’ve gained another in the form of Brian Wood’s American Revolution drama series Rebels. Set for release this April, Wood has teamed up with artist Andrea Mutti and colourist Jordie Bellaire for what’s set to be a rather brutal retelling of the War for Independence from the perspective of young militia soldiers and their families.
Dark Horse have released a few images of the artwork for Rebels and it does seem rather special, with dusky brown woodland and stark, snow graced fields, emblazoned with blood red British uniforms and the deep blue of the militia fighters. The American war for Independence is a story rarely told this side of the Atlantic and something that might be completely new to many readers. It’s a bit of a break from all this Millennium Falcon, chrome Stormtrooper malarkey at least!
SWORDS OF SORROW (Dynamite)
Here at IWG, we really like Gail Simone and we’re very excited by her latest upcoming venture Swords of Sorrow. Think Red Sonja, Vampirella, Jungle Girl and a whole host of others teaming up to… well kick ass really. That seems the basics of it in all honesty, and what’s not to like! Sergio Davila takes the lead on illustration and it seems there may even be a few one off side adventures thrown into the mix just for all the hard-core comic collectors out there. #1 is set for release May 6th.
There are plenty more hot comics out now or coming soon that didn’t get a full mention here. Here’s two more from Image you might want to keep an eye out for:
CHRONONAUTS (Image). Mark Millar (Writer). Sean Gordon Murphy (Art). Think good ol’ buddy adventure with a bit of time travelling lumped into the mix as well.
RED ONE (Image). Terry Dudson, Rachel Dudson & Xavier Dorison. Think 1977, dangerous Soviet spies in Los Angeles and more Go-Go boots than you could ever dream of!
